Photobiomodulation Therapy is the use of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in treating the genetic forms of hair loss common in men and women, androgenetic alopecia or pattern balding. LLLT is intended for men and women with thinning hair or pattern baldness caused by a hereditary condition.
Low level laser therapy is one of the more common ways to treat the progression of hair loss and help promote hair growth that is available today. Laser therapy has been found to slow or even halt hair loss, and with consistent use has also been found to grow and thicken existing hair.
Low level laser therapy is a well recognised option for treating hair loss. Only recently, within the past decade has laser light phototherapy gained acceptance in treating hair loss. Previously there were skeptics in the medical community who have since been swayed by the evidence from clinical trials. These include the most reputable doctors in the field of hair restoration and hair transplant surgery including world renowned doctors in the field of hair loss.

Low Level Laser Therapy at Work

When laser light therapy is applied to a targeted area - in this case the scalp, it has been found to increase blood flow to wherever it is being applied. The specific wavelength of light used in low level laser therapy (630 to 670 nm) stimulates the mitochondria (the energy centers of our cells), resulting in cells that become much more active. When this happens, the cells metabolise faster resulting in more blood flow. More blood flow means that more oxygen, platelets, and other healing properties that our bodies naturally produce get applied to help the affected area. The end result is a healthier scalp and more often than not, thicker, healthier new hair growth.

Who Can Benefit from Photobiomodulation Therapy

Photobiomodulation therapy is a highly viable option for growing hair in men and women with androgenetic alopecia (inherited pattern hair loss). It is not intended to treat hair loss due to other medical conditions. In treating androgenetic alopecia, doctors have found that low level laser therapy is most effective in persons with minimal to moderate hair loss. Individual responses to laser therapy may differ and results do vary from person to person.
